Obituary

Mrs. Adeline Richardson Hodge, daughter of Thomas and Maria Keene Richardson, was born February 23, 1914 in Columbus, OH. Mrs. Hodge was the last surviving  child of 7 children. She departed this life Thursday, May 11, 2023 at the age of 109.

At the age of 5 years old, Mrs. Hodge and family relocated to Winston-Salem, NC where she was educated in the local public schools, and graduated in 1930 at the age of 16 from Columbian Heights High School, the only school for Black students. She later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1942 from Winston-Salem Teachers College (Now Winston-Salem State University), and received her Master's degree in Elementary Education from A&T State University in 1960. She also earned a Graduate Certificate from Star Stenographic School of Business in the late '40's. Mrs. Hodge was an employee for eight years at R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company before becoming an elementary teacher for 30 years in Stokes County.

Mrs. Hodge joined the Shiloh Baptist Church at the age of 13, and actively served as Church Historian, was a life member of the Chancel Choir, Missionary Chairperson, and Sunday School.

Mrs. Hodge was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charlie Hodge; siblings; several nieces and nephews.

She leaves to cherish many dear and loving memories to her nephew and caregiver, Thomas Poole, Sr.; one niece, Bernice Fleming of Washington, DC; one step-son-in-law, William Griffin, Sr. (Barbara-deceased); two step-grandsons, William Griffin, Jr. and Carl Griffin; a host of great nieces and nephews; great-great nieces and nephews; the Shiloh Baptist Church Family and many friends.
