Ms. Alice R. Smith was born in Winston-Salem, NC to Robert D. and Mamie Linville Smith.
She attended 14 th Street Elementary School, Atkins High School, and Winston-Salem Teachers College (WSSU). Ms. Alice Smith received her M.A. degree in Early Child Education from Howard University in Washington, D.C. After graduating from Howard University, Ms. Smith dedicated her life to teaching in the D.C. Public School system. Not only was she a dedicated educator who touched the lives of many students, she was also involved in many committees to include the National Education Association, the D.C. Education Association, and the National Congress of Parents and Teachers.
Affiliations were many, some of which are: Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., NAACP, African American Women Association, D.C., National Women of Achievement, and a life-long member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she was a dedicated participant and leader in several auxiliaries to include Sunday School and missionary group. She was also well known for her beautiful voice singing soprano in the Cathedral Choir at John Wesley AME Zion Church, D.C.
Hobbies included photography and traveling. Travels included all of the fifty US states including Alaska and Hawaii, Europe including England, the Netherlands, Germany - Liechtenstein, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France-Portugal, Monaco, Russia - Moscow, Greece, South America – Peru, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, South East Asia – Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Middle East – Israel, Jordan, Caribbean Islands, British West Indies Islands, Canary Islands, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Africa (she visited her beloved country seven times) – Dakar, Senegal; The Gambia; Nairobi, Kenya; Cairo, Egypt; Tanzania; Mombasa; Alexandria; Aswan; Luxor; Abu-Simbel; Morocco, South Africa, India – New Delhi, Bombay, South Africa – Johannesburg and Capetown, Figi, and New Zealand.
Affectionately called Aunt Alice, Ms. Smith was the matriarch of her family. She completed her journey on March 9, 2022, after touching many lives. She will be missed for her love and lessons taught. She lived her life with integrity, honesty, and with high standards and values that she passed on to others.
Ms. Alice R. Smith was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Robert R. Smith, sister, W. Elvin Smith, and O'neal Glenn. Survivors include a niece, Barbara S. Smith and family; nephews, LeRoy W. Glenn, Jr. and family, Reginald Glenn and family, Khan Davison and family, and family of the late Robert R. Smith; and a host of grand-nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family of Ms. Alice R. Smith would like to extend a special thank you to Joanitha Kwanuka for her care and support of Aunt Alice for over 4 years.
Graveside services will be held 11:00 am at Evergreen Cemetery Friday March 18, 2022.
