Carmen Eldwin Lyons Sr., affectionately known as "Tubby," passed away peacefully on July 13, 2026, at the age of 80. Born on July 3, 1946, in Durham, North Carolina, to the late William and Bertha Lyons, Tubby's life was a testament to dedication and strength.
A graduate of Anderson High School, Tubby was awarded a band/music scholarship. However, he chose a different path, serving his country in the United States Army with distinguished honors. His service brought him numerous accolades, reflecting the dedication he poured into all his pursuits.
After his military service, Tubby embarked on a groundbreaking career at Westinghouse in Winston-Salem, where he made history as the first African American supervisor. His hard work was recognized with various certificates of accomplishment. His journey didn’t end there; after retiring, Tubby returned to work with W-S Forsyth County school system as a school bus driver, earning awards for his excellence. Tubby was a proud and confident man that put 100% in all of his endeavors.
In his later years, Tubby devoted himself to caring for his dear mother, whom he cherished deeply until her passing. His legacy of love and commitment greatly impacted all who knew him.
Preceded in death by his brother, William "Bobby" Lyons, and sister, Carolyn Lyons, Tubby leaves behind cherished memories with his devoted wife of over 30 years, Philana Clement Lyons. He is survived by his sons, Carmen Eldwin Lyons Jr. (Donna), Carmen Eldwin Lyons III, and bonus son, Joshua Clement. His legacy continues through six granddaughters, Athena, Tierra, Sharonna, Demonica, Aquanette, Indya Lyons Roberts, a grandson, Malik Lyons Roberts, and thirteen great-grandchildren, along with numerous other relatives and friends who will forever hold him dear.
A Service in his Memory will be held on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at 3:00 pm in the chapel of Hooper Funeral Home. The family will welcome friends from 2:30 to 3:00 pm prior to the service.
