Obituary

Donnis Maxine Barner 85 was born September 10, 1937 in Cleveland County, NC to the late John Frank and Jewell Withrow Barner.  She departed this life on February 2, 2023 at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC.

Donnis attended Douglas High School and graduated May of 1956.  She attended  the National Institute of Drycleaning in Silver Springs, Maryland in 1966. She lived in New Jersey and worked in the hospitality industry.  In the early 1980s she returned to the Cleveland County area where she lived and worked for several years. In the early 1990s she moved to Kernersville, NC where worked at Dudley Cosmetology University Inn, this allowed her  to be near her two grandsons whom she loved dearly.

She attended Brooks Chapel United Methodist Church in her early years. She was water- baptized January 15, 1995, by Pastor Howard Daniels at Living Water Non-Denominational Church Winston-Salem, NC.  Donnis enjoyed attending and worshiping at a variety of churches.

She was preceded in death by sisters Lucinda Barner, Carolyn Taylor (Reverend Habakkuk), and Clara Famble (Robert), and brothers Theodore Samuel Barner, Frank Calvin Barner, Retired Lieutenant Colonel John Virgil Barner (Corene), and Reverend Albert Daniel Barner Sr. (Lillie) and former son-in-law Dwight Anthony Jones.

She leaves to cherish fond memories a daughter Jacqueline Barner Jones, two grandsons Solomun Jones (Megan) of California and Nahshon Jones of North Carolina two siblings Linda Barner Lawndale, NC and Robert "Bob" Barner (Reverend Dr. Barbara) Lawndale, NC and a sister-in-law Elder Ruby Barner Forest City, NC. She leaves a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends with whom she communicated via phone calls.


Funeral services will be held 12:00pm Wednesday 2/08/23 in the chapel of Hooper Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 11am-12pm at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Brooks Chapel UMC, Building Fund, P.O. Box 229, Polkville, NC 28136
