Mrs. Dorothy Mae Emma Roseborough Hunter born to the late John Calvin Roseborough and Beulah McMillan Roseborough in Forsyth Co, North Carolina on September 12, 1933. She was educated in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools and graduated from Atkins High school Class of 1951. She began her music studies at age 9 and attended the NC School of Arts later in life where she completed courses in organ. Mrs. Hunter work history included positions held at Arcade Fashion Shop for 25 years downtown Winston-Salem downtown, Davis Department Store, Reynolds Health Center, and office management at Innotech Computer and Training. She was a past member of Sethos Court No.105 Oasis of Winston-Salem, Daughters of Isis where she served faithfully for many years as a member, past queen, Directress/Pianist of "The Voices of Isis."
She was baptized on April 14th, 1945 at the age of 12 and began her early Christian Education at Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. In the summer of 1956 Mrs. Hunter organized a choir to sing gospel songs at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church named "The Young People's Choir to which she was appointed pianist. In 1971 the choir recorded their first album entitled "Praise God." In 1979, the choir recorded another album entitled, "One More Time" live at Mount Pleasant. Under her leadership the choir was renamed "The Henry S. Lewis Cathedral Choir" in 1976. She also served as pianist and directress of the children's choir that was renamed "The Inspirational Youth Choir." She served faithfully as pianist, choir director, organist for 33 years until she retired in 1989.
Mrs. Hunter was united in marriage to Garrett Edward Hunter, Jr on March 12, 1960. Their union was blessed with three children, Sabrina Dianne, Garrett Edward, and Angela Voncille.
Mrs. Hunter was a devoted mother and grandmother. She loved her family, spending time with her grandchildren, and cherished her relationship with many friends. She enjoyed playing the piano and hosting an annual Christmas sing along at her home. She was an amazing, gifted cook and loved feeding others, especially her Sunday dinners. The wisdom she imparted to others and smile will long be remembered by all whom she met. She will be deeply missed.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two children; Wanda Elizabeth and Darryl. Three brothers, Joseph Roseborough, Haywood Roseborough, and Wade Roseborough; Two sisters, Leretha Pankey, and Dermetta Jones.
Dorothy Mae Emma Roseborough Hunter departed this life at Novant Forsyth Medical Center on October 27, 2023.
She leaves to cherish loving memories her three children, Sabrina Dianne James (Anthony of Winston-Salem; Garrett Edward Hunter III of Winston-Salem; Angela Hunter Pope(Edward) of Belews Creek, NC; One sister, Vera Roseborough of Winston-Salem; two devoted grandsons, Kenard Shepard and Enrico Hunter (Candace) of Huntsville, Ala; three grand-daughters, Ashley Pope, Alesia Pope, Ebony Jordan; two great grandchildren, Ila Jordan and Christian Hunter; devoted niece and caregiver Lisa Roseborough; devoted caregiver, Kemi Egbewole; devoted friends, Helen W. Smith, Shirley Eaton, Odessa Gaither, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and many friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held 12 noon Saturday November 4, 2023 at Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, 495 NW Crawford Place Winston-Salem, NC 27105. The family and visitation is 11am-12noon.
