Obituary

Dorothy Lee Stroud was born February 5, 1927 in Winston-Salem, NC. She was the fifth and youngest child of James Henry and Lee Ella Stroud. She transitioned into eternity peacefully surrounded by family on September 20, 2022.

Dorothy, affectionately known as "Dottie" to her friends, "Shing" to her siblings, and "Gee Gee" to her grandchildren was a renaissance woman if ever there was one. Her life was full of adventure, culture, the joys of family, resilience amidst adversity, the gift of friendship, love, laughter and through it all God's grace.

She was a product of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system and graduated from Atkins High School. She went on to later become the president of the Atkins Alumni association for her class.

She relocated to New York City where she had the opportunity to incorporate her love of fashion and finer craftsmanship into her professional life. Dorothy worked for the Georg Jensen Corporation as well as Lord and Taylor for many, many years. She switched gears and worked in a managerial capacity with American Express until retirement.

She became a member of Goler Memorial AME Zion church as a child and later in her life she served on the deaconess board. She was always willing to lend a helping hand whenever needed.

Dorothy had an affinity for the arts, fine cuisine, and traveling. Living in New York afforded her many outlets to enjoy. She carried fond memories throughout her life of amazing shows, the opera, and trips abroad. She had just as much love for home as well. Laughing and chatting with friends was a common pastime. You would often hear jazz music playing in her home. She loved the works of Paul Lawrence Dunbar and could recite many pieces. Spending time with her children, and later grand and great-grandchildren always brought a big smile to her face.

She was preceded in death by her parents James and Lee Ella (Westbrook) Stroud and her brothers Norvell and Spurgeon Stroud. Left to cherish her memory are her sisters Earline Dennis and Sara Elliott; her children Janice Ramadan, Alphonso Dickey Jr (Betty), Amir Ahmed, Patricia White (Alfred), and Kilm McDougal, Nine amazing grandchildren; seven beautiful great-grandchildren.

As the last verse of her favorite scripture, Psalms 23, tell us: Goodness and Mercy followed her all the days of her life. And now she will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.  We will love her always and cherish the life we shared with her.

A celebration of her life will be held 12:00 pm Monday September 26, 2022 at Goler Memorial AME Zion Church with Rev. Dr. George C. Banks, pastor, officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:30 am-12:00 pm at the church. Interment will follow at Crestview Memorial Park. Her remains may be viewed Sunday from 12pm-6pm at Hooper Funeral Home.
