Ertha Lee.
Cummings
Oct 13, 1932 — Nov 9, 2020
Ertha L. (GG) Cummings recently celebrated her 88 th birthday surrounded by her family with love and joy. Our hearts are broken that her departure came so soon following that moment. However we take comfort in knowing that she lived a full life and knew she was loved by her family and friends.
Born in Ehrhart, SC on October 13, 1932 to the late Rev. Leroy Grant and Viola Kinard—her mother departed this life when Ertha was a young girl. Her father later moved to Philadelphia, PA where she was raised by her loving Grandmother, Mamie Miller Kinard. GG accepted Christ as her Savior at a very young age, and her lasting faith followed her as she went home to be with the Lord on Monday, November 9, 2020.
GG was the family orator, always entertaining her family and friends with life's rich moments and experiences. She had a way of even making a stranger seem familiar. Family was so precious to GG, the greatest joy of her life was giving birth to her daughter, Viola Beccles. They were literally the best of friends. Her guiding hands and her love will live on in her grand and great grandchildren forever.
In 1953 GG worked as a sewing machine operator at the Department of the Army Philadelphia Quartermasters Depot. She used her seamstress skills to make uniforms for our armed forces for 34 years until her retirement. In 2010, she moved to Winston Salem, NC. In her usual fashion, she befriended many people. She joined Union Baptist Church and always enjoyed attending the services. Even though we are filled with mixed emotions, we find solace in knowing that she awaits to be reunited with those that proceeded her death including her parents, her grandmother, her loving sisters, Mamie Hill and Carrie Thompson and her brother Marvin Grant.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her daughter, Viola Beccles; her sister, Diane Lewis; grandchildren, Jacque Lawrence and Jonathan Beccles (Melissa); the great-grandchildren, David, Cherise, Tyanna, Jon, Samir, Jacob, Nasir, Brianna, Jayceon, Savonah, Shamar, Kyle, and Torrell; the great-great-grandchildren King and Kayson and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Her remains will lie in repose 12pm-6pm Sunday, Nov. 15, 2020 in Hooper Funeral Home. Graveside rites will be held 2pm Monday, Nov. 15, 2020 in Piedmont Memorial Gardens.
