Obituary

Fred Delano Johnson, beloved, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, veteran, mentor and friend, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2026 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina , with the love of his life by his side. He was 91 years old. 

Fred was born on May 25, 1935 in Washington, DC to the late Fred D. Johnson and Dora Rhodes Johnson. From an early age, he displayed and exceptional aptitude for mathematics, mechanics and problem solving. Much of what Fred knew  was self-taught, a testament to his curiosity, determination, and lifelong commitment to learning. Through hard work and perseverance, he developed skills and knowledge that would serve him throughout his personal and professional life. 

A proud patriot, Fred served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War Conflict.  Following his military service, he embarked on a distinguished professional career marked by dedication, innovation, and excellence. From 1957 to 1960, he worked form MelPar Electronics, Inc. in Fall Church ,Virginia, as an Electronical and Mechanical Draftsman. He later joined the General Services Administration(GSA), serving as an Electrician from 1966 to 1969 before advancing through the organization. His talent, leadership, and work ethic ultimately led him to become the first African American Buildings Manager for the GSA, breaking barriers and creating opportunities for those who followed.

Fred was a man of extraordinary character and wisdom., He possessed a unique ability to solve any problem that came his way and was known for his remarkable skills as a builder, craftsman, and mathematician. Whether repairing, creating, calculating, or teaching, he approached every task with patience and precision. More importantly, he approached people with kindness and respect. He believed every person deserved dignity and treated family, friends and strangers alike with genuine care and consideration 

His faith was a guiding force  throughout his life.  Fred was a devoted member of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. North Carolina, where he faithfully served in numerous ministries. He was an active member of the Trustee Ministry, Security Ministry, Brotherhood Ministry, and Sunday School, and proudly served as President of the Golden Ages Senior Citizens Ministry. Through his church family, Fred built lifelong friendships and found another family among those who worshiped and served alongside him. His commitment to faith, fellowship, and service left a lasting impact on his church community.

Family was the center of Fred's world. He loved deeply and cared for those around him profoundly. HIs presence brought comfort, guidance, laughter, and stability to generations of loved ones.  He enjoyed life's simple pleasurers-taking long  walks, playing checkers, enjoying ice cream, cake and his favorite snack of Ritz Crackers with cheese. His warm smile, quick wit, and steadfast love will be remembered by all who knew him.

Fred is survived by his devoted with Constance Graham Johnson; his loving son Darryl(Jaeneen) Johnson; his beloved sister, Joan Traynham and cherished granddaughters, Maria(Cory) Jones, Virginia(Micah) Hudson, Patricia Johnson (Phillip), Alexandrya Bryant and Karrengton Fountain, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

He was the proud great grandfather of Ava, Amira and Alayna Jones, Nehemiah, Ariana and Desmond Hudson; Zaeden Johnson; Charlie Haynes and Jordyn Bryant, all of whom brought immense joy to his life. He also leaves behind a host of loving nieces nephews extended family members, church family members, and dear friends who will forever treasure his memory.

Fred was preceded in death by his father, Fred  D. Johnson, mother Dora Johnson  Elizabeth Clinton Johnson; sisters Carroll Johnson and Mary Alice Wilkins; brother Grant Clinton and his beloived son, Derrick Courtney Johnson.

Fred's life was defined by faith, service, perseverance, wisdom, and unconditional love. He was a man who never met a challenge he would not work to overcome a problem he would not attempt to solve, or a person he would not try to encourage.  His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the church the faithfully served, the barriers he broke and the countless lives he touched through his example.

Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who were blessed to know and love him. His family will remember him as a man who could build anything, fix anything, solve almost anything, and make everyone feel valued and respected. His strength, wisdom, faith, and love will continue to inspire all who carry his legacy forward.
