Mrs. Hattie Louella Burns McLendon, the daughter of the late Will and Glendola C. Burns was born on December 30, 1933 in Anderson, South Carolina. She was the oldest of 14 siblings. She was preceded in death by her husband Sherman McLendon, parents, and siblings, Lula Starks, John William Burns, Mattie Lee Burns, Katherine Burns, twins Ronald and Donald Burns, Pressley Burns, Steve Burns, and Walter Carter.
She graduated from Geer Gantt High School of Honea Path South Carolina. She was an active member of Union Chapel Baptist on the Usher board and Senior choir, until declining health. Over Hattie's 89 year lifespan, she worked at Jay Murphy's Lunch, Made Rite Sandwich, ITT Grinnell, Parkland High School, and Sedge Garden Elementary in Housekeeping where she earned a certificate for Lead Janitor. She was also a domestic housekeeper for some of the teachers at Sedge Garden Elementary, who loved her dearly. She moved to Winston Salem in the early 1950's and lived with her aunt Nettie Carter. She met and married her husband of 64 years, Sherman McLendon on September 6,1957.
Hattie never met a stranger and once you encountered her, you never forgot her or her beautiful smile, and jovial manner. You knew you had a friend for life. She loved and cared deeply for her family. If they ever needed anything, no matter what, she was there to comfort them, love them, offer her wisdom, loving prayers and scripture. She never said no. She entered into eternal peace on Friday, April 14, 2023 at Trellis Hospice House after a two year long and courageous battle from complications of a stroke and other illnesses.
She is survived by her loving children Lawrence Burns (Cardeas), Donald McLendon, Nanette McLendon, and Cynthia McLendon. Eleven Grandchildren Anthony Burns, Sukim Terry, Lashuna Burns, Dementrus Burns (Mary), Donald Branson, Sheena McLendon, Jasmin Frazier, J'Son Hughes, Brittany Eccles, Bradley Eccles (Ashlin), and Briann Eccles. Twelve great grandchildren. Four sisters Willie Ann Simmons (Lucius), Clatis Freeman (Leon), Lesslie Reynolds (William), and Beverly Woods (Michael). She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews. A devoted nephew Rev. Lucius Simmons who visited and checked on his aunt often. Her extended family and niece Daisy Herring and family. Special friends Shelvy, Deliah, Cynthia and Marguarite Tyson.
Funeral services will be held 2:30 pm Saturday April 22, 2023 in the chapel of Hooper Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 2-2:30pm at the funeral home. Interment will be held 10:00 am Monday April 24, 2024 at the Salisbury National Cemetery.
