Obituary

James Bennett Smith, "JB" was born on May 2, 1944 to Willa Mae and James Nathaniel Smith. JB lived most of his life in Winston-Salem, NC to be near his family especially his mother. He was the oldest of five siblings and served as their role model.

He was a graduate of Atkins High School and served his country in the Marine Corps.

JB enjoyed traveling and working with his hands he could build a house from the ground up!  He had a varied work history including the first African American o drive a train. He was a jack of all trades and was called upon frequently to repair or replace broken things.

James stated "I have enjoyed my life travelled the world, out there don't owe me anything".

JB leaves cherished memories to one son, Christopher Douglas of Winston-Salem; mother, Willa Shelton; brothers, Ronald Funderburke, Preston Funderburke, Albert Funderburke and Dexter(Daisy) Funderburke; one sister, Sonjia Funderburke all of Winston-Salem, NC; a host of other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Sunday November 3, 2024 at Ephesus 7th Day Adventist Church, 1225 N. Cleveland Avenue.
