Obituary

Jessie Lorraine Meadows Crockett (94) was born in Winston-Salem, NC on March 16, 1930, to the late Harvey and Annie Bell Meadows. She was the oldest of 4 children. She departed this life on Wednesday June 19, 2024 after an extended illness.

Jessie graduated from Atkins High School in 1947 with high honors. She wrote the class song and history of the school and the gossip column for the school newspaper, "The Maroon Wave."

She worked at R. J Reynolds Tobacco Company retiring after 20 years of service.

Jessie was a lifelong member of Reynolds Temple (now Christ Temple) CME Church. She participated on the Choir, Missionary, Stewardess Boards and also as an Exhorter on special Sundays.

Jessie has participated in the Piedmont Senior Games/Silver Arts Competitions winning 21 medals. She also wrote 2 books "Encouraging Stories and Essays" and "Expressions from the Heart."

She was preceded in death by her daughters, Vickie H. Hairston and Brenda Cunningham; one son, Vernon LeRoy Hunter; brothers, David, Raythel and Alfonso Meadows.

She leaves cherished memories to her husband of 44 years, Oscar Crockett III of the home; one daughter Lydia D. Hunter of Seattle Washington; three sons, Johnell (Debra) Hunter, Donald Ray Hunter and Stanley Hunter all of Winston-Salem, NC; seventeen grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Carolyn Crockett and Shirley Sanders both of Winston-Salem, NC and Lula Meadows of Chester, SC; two brothers-in-law, Fred(Beatrice) Crockett of Roanoke, VA and Kenneth (Ann) Crockett of Winston-Salem, NC; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins,  and many friends.

A homegoing celebration will be held 12:00 noon Saturday June 29, 2024 at Christ Temple CME Church, 2935 N. Glenn Ave Winston-Salem, NC 27105. The family will receive friends from 11am-12pm at the church. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
