John Walter
Moore
Apr 24, 1936 — Jun 3, 2025
John Walter Moore was born in Kinston, North Carolina, to the late Johnny and Erma Moore. He departed this life on Tuesday June 3, 2025, in the comfort of his home with his loving wife Doris G. Moore at his bedside.
He graduated from Adkin High School in Kinston, NC. After high school, John set his sights on becoming an X-ray Technician. Though his initial attempt to enroll in the Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospital School of X-Ray Technology was met with a delay, John's determination never wavered.
He first enrolled in Franklin School of Science and Art in Philadelphia, PA, where he earned a certificate in X-ray Technology. He later enrolled in the Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospital School of X-Ray Technology in 1960, graduating and becoming certified in 1962. Soon after, he passed the National Registry and began working at Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospital.
Six months later, John was drafted into the United States Army. He served honorably for two years before returning to what he fondly called "Katie B." He continued his work there until 1972, when he was transferred to Forsyth Memorial Hospital. John dedicated 35 years of his life to his profession, retiring in 1998.
John also believed in the power of education. He earned his Associate of Applied Science degree from Winsalm College in 1974, and went on to graduate from Winston-Salem State University in 1983. A proud alumnus, John joined the Winston-Salem State Brown Alumni Chapter in 1984, serving as treasurer from 1990 until his resignation in 2009.
In 1988, John became an Omega Man (Ω), joining Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., where he held the position of Keeper of Finance (KOF) for two years.
John was married to Doris G. Moore. He was a devoted family man, proud father to a son and grandfather to Tyson. He became a member of Grace Presbyterian Church in 1965, serving as Deacon, Elder, and eventually Church Treasurer—a role he held from 1988 to 2014. He also volunteered as a Principal for the Grace Presbyterian Church Tutorial Program.
John's commitment to his community extended beyond the church. He worked with the Carver High School Network Greeter Program and the Northwood Know Your Neighbor Club, where he was elected Treasurer twice and served until 2014.
John enjoyed a rich life filled with hobbies that reflected his hands-on nature and love for learning. He took pride in working on his 1986 Camaro, repairing computers, and tending to his garden.
John Walter Moore will be remembered for his service, leadership, and the love he shared with his family, church, and community.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Doris G. Moore, grandson Tyson Moore, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
