Joseph S. Thompkins Sr, a long-time resident of Winston-Salem, transitioned on Saturday the 30th of July at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was born on August 10th, 1937 to the late Ellie Thompkins and Amanda Simpson Thompkins. Joseph graduated from Atkins High School in 1956 and worked at RJ Reynolds Tobacco Co. as a factory worker for 31 years, retiring in the year 2000. Joseph was a faithful member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, where he served in the Male choir. He enjoyed singing, watching sports (boxing, football and wrestling), spending time with family and had a sense of humor like no other. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Marcius Thompkins, and three sisters: Margaret Thompkins Brown, Doris O. Thompkins, and Betty J. Thompkins Snow. Mr. Thompkins is survived by his loving wife Minister Katie Thompkins of 57 years, four children, Adrienne "Rita" T. Bailey of the city, Joseph S. Thompkins Jr. (Monica) of the city, Bryant Thompkins (Crystal) of Richmond, Texas, and Tameka Thompkins in the city; eleven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends. The service celebrating the life of Joseph S. Thompkins Sr will be held on Saturday, August 6th, 2022. This will be held at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church at 3:00 pm with a thirty-minute viewing beginning at 2:30 pm, with Bishop John C. Parks officiating. The burial will be held at Piedmont Memorial Gardens following the service.
