Obituary

Mrs. Josephine  Stokes McGriff was born December 9, 1952 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was a 1971 graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School and attended North Carolina Central University, Durham, NC and Winston-Salem State University. Josephine loved to travel and for over 45 years was a flight attendant having worked for Piedmont Airlines, USAIR/USAIRWAYS and American Airlines.

Spiritually, she was member of First Baptist Church where she served on the usher board. In her spare time, she loved to cook for family as well as entertain her many friends. She loved her family dearly and was a friend to all around her.

She devoted her time and services to the Susan G. Komen Foundation whenever possible.

Mrs. McGriff was preceded in death by her parents  William Gaither and Ruth Stokes; two brothers, William Smith and Alphonso Durham. She departed this life peacefully Tuesday July 5, 2022 at her residence surrounded by family.

Those left to cherish dear memories are her husband, Zyro McGriff of the home; daughter Ashleigh McGriff; son, Bradley McGriff; grandson, James Raley Jr.; sister, Dorothy Stokes of San Jose, CA; brother Anthony Stokes; 5 nieces including Michaela McGriff ; 4 nephews including Warren Williams; 4 sisters-in-law; 2 brothers-in-law; special caregivers, Dyna McGriff, Bernese Cason and Deborah Stokes; and  host of other relatives and friends including devoted friends Rebecca Cumbo and Linda Chambers; her extended NCCU (Eagles) family, and co-workers from US Airways and American Airlines.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 pm Tuesday July 12, 2022 at First Baptist Church-Highland Avenue. Interment will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery Walkertown, NC. The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm-1:00 pm at the church. Her remains may be viewed Monday July 11, 2022 from 12pm-6pm at Hooper Funeral Home.
