Joyce Deloris Lorick Summey, affectionately known as "Mama Joyce", transcended to her heavenly home on Thursday, March 21, 2024. She was born on March 30, 1936, in Winston Salem, North Carolina to James and Maude Greene, but was reared by loving parents Lang and Florence Lorick.
Joyce was a proud honor graduate of Simon G. Atkins High School where she played the xylophone in the marching band.
Upon graduation from high school, she matriculated to the illustrious North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University where she received a full scholarship from the L. Richardson Foundation and majored in Nursing. Mrs. Summey loved her alma mater and graduated Summa Cum Laude. It was a distinct honor as she was in the first graduating class of nursing. Following her graduation, she embraced opportunities across various states, leaving an indelible mark wherever she went. Her adventurous spirit and unwavering commitment touched the lives of many. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her aspirations led her to work in Durham, NC, Boston, MA, Tuskegee AL, Washington, DC, and Winston Salem, NC. Over the course of her life, she worked in many aspects of medicine including teaching nursing at the Kate Bitting Reynolds School of Nursing, working in the Medical-Surgical unit, Recovery Room, Public Health Nursing, Operating Room, and Neurology. Overall, Mrs. Summey's career spanned 43 years.
Joyce married Alpha Omega Summey on April 9, 1960, and from that union they had three sons and four daughters.
Mrs. Summey was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Helene Ketter, Judith Hall, and Marilyn Carroll, her brothers James Hicks and Michael Greene. She leaves to cherish her memory seven children, Darryl Summey, Joycelyn Summey, MD, Deidre Summey, Byron Summey, Kim Summey, Jamal Summey, and Andra Summey; one sister Mrs. Beverly Champion; one brother Mr. Richard Greene; nine grandchildren, Shea Summey, Rashard Greene, Byron Summey, Brandon Summey, Alexis Summey, Kelsey Summey, Jaden Baldwin, Alexa Summey, and William David Huntley; one great-grandchild; Anthony Amir Summey; nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 12:00 pm Friday March 29, 2024 at Union Baptist Church, 1200 N. Trade Street Winston-Salem, NC. The family will receive friends from 11:00am-12:00 pm at the church Friday. Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park
