Obituary

Lasonya Marie Mason (Pookie), life was fully lived, and she departed on May 16, 2021. Lasonya was born on October 24, 1972 in Winston-Salem, NC. She was the daughter of Tanya L. Mason and the late Ernest Brown. She was a loving daughter, sister, mother, grandmother and friend.

Lasonya was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School in 1992. During her high school years, she enjoyed the sport of basketball. Anyone that knew Lasonya knows that with hair she mastered the game of deep ocean waves and scrunches in the Winston-Salem community. In recent years she developed a true passion for crocheting. As everything else in her life, she took pride in her art of crocheting. She was always happy, energetic, and a straight-forward friend to everyone. If anyone could brighten a room it would be Lasonya.

She was preceded in death (father) Ernest Brown, (fraternal grandmother) Grace Springs, (maternal grandmother) Marie Mason, (uncle) James Mason, (aunt) Deborah Mason-Montgomery.

She is survived by two children, (son) Keyon Mason and (daughter) Ikiya Mason; (granddaughter) Alexa Marie Clancy three sisters Shunta Mason, Nicole Hairston, and Kesha Brown, all of Winston Salem, NC. Two brothers Nicolas Hairston (Charlotte, NC) and Topaz Rawlinson (San Diego, CA), a devoted nephew Khali Mason (Winston Salem, NC), devoted cousin Ottra Frazier (Winston Salem, NC), an Aunt Florence Williams (Winston Salem, NC), three uncles Tyroe Montgomery and Debrah (Winston Salem, NC), Kenny Springs (Winston Salem, NC), and Jerry Springs (Winston Salem, NC), six nieces, 1 nephew, devoted best friends Katisha Blackwell and Latiesha Peterson, and a host of family and friends.

A public viewing will be held Friday May 21, 2021 from 1pm-6pm at Hooper Funeral Home. Funeral service will be private.
