Lou White Scott, daughter of the late Mack Willie White and Mattie Coleman White, was born in Florence County on August 14, 1931. Following the passing of her mother, Mattie, Lou was just six months old; she was lovingly raised by Odessa White Rhodes and George Rhodes, Sr. Lou peacefully passed away at the age of 93 on October 24, 2024, in Durham, North Carolina. Known for her vibrant spirit and sociable nature, Lou had a remarkable ability to connect with everyone she encountered. Her home was always a warm and inviting place, filled with the comforting aromas of her cooking and the joyful sounds of family and friends.
Lou devoted her life to her family as a steadfast wife and loving mother. She also served the Hutchins family as a dedicated housekeeper across multiple generations, embodying loyalty and care. Her educational journey began in the public schools of Sumter County, grounding her in the values of resilience and community.
A woman of faith, Lou was an active member of the Star of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where she found comfort and joy in her faith community. Her hobbies of traveling and reading enriched her life and conversations, bringing new perspectives to those around her.
Lou was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edgar Scott; her son, Edgar Tyrone Scott; four brothers, Carrel Rhodes, James White, Walter White, and Jessie White; six sisters, Ernestine Scott, Catherine White Jackson, Dorothy White Goodman, Miona Rhodes, Readis Boles, and Lizzie White Moore. She is survived by her son, Dennis Scott (Myra Scott), of Durham, North Carolina. Her surviving siblings include Mary Quattlebaum of Lynchburg, South Carolina; Frances Rhodes, New York, New York; Rose Little (Roosevelt) Florence, SC; Wallace Rhodes (Josephine) of Winston Salem, North Carolina; George S. Rhodes, Jr., Lake City, South Carolina; Willie B. White, Timmonsville, South Carolina; and Doris Myles (Cecil) of New Jersey. Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren: Jamall Scott (Sharique) Winnipeg, Manitoba; Dennis Scott Jr. (Birmingham, Alabama); Edgar Tyrone Scott, Jr. (ShaShawna) Gaithersburg, Maryland; Artia Alston (Brandon) Salisbury, North Carolina; and Ashley Scott Winston Salem, North Carolina, along with 11 cherished great-grandchildren, and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
Lou's life will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, and the deep connections she formed with everyone around her. Her presence will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Family visitation will be held 11am Friday, Nov. 1, 2024 at Star of Bethlehem Lutheran Church with the funeral service following at 12pm. Repast will be held, following the interment, at S&G Event Center, 8017 Northpoint Blvd., WS, NC 27106.
