Obituary

Mrs. Lucy Boykin Lindsey was born February 6, 1941 to the late John Wright, Sr. and Beulah Wright in Winston-Salem, NC.  She peacefully transitioned from this life Thursday, April 21, 2022 at Novant Forsyth Medical Center.

Mrs. Lindsey attended Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools, graduating from Atkins High School on June 5, 1962.  During High School Lucy Wright was a member of the Student Council, Junior Red Cross, Spanish Club, Dramatic Club and Choir.  Lucy's passion for music and her talent would become the driving force leading her to be recognized on a local and statewide level as a consummate vocalist.  Notably Lucy Wright, as a member of an established band, was featured as the opening act for James Brown and the Flames performing in Winston-Salem, NC.  After the impressive performance, she was offered the opportunity to continue on tour with the group as the regularly featured opening act.  In addition to the above extracurricular participation, Lucy Wright was an actress with the Community Players Guild in the early 60s.  Lucy was featured as "Ruth Lansing", the wife of Petey the protagonist in Petey's Choice.

Mrs. Lindsey, pre-deceased by her first spouse, Bobby Boykin, Sr. dutifully embarked upon many travels as a military spouse, performing in many locales throughout Germany for military Officers and Dignitaries.  Upon returning stateside in 1966 Lucy resumed her Christian journey as a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church as a member of the Gospel Choir. Additionally, Lucy was employed by Gallins Vending Company at Reynolds Health Center.

In the early 1970s Lucy became a member of Ephesus Seventh-Day Adventist Church, originally located on Third & Dunleith Avenue (W-S).  As a member of Ephesus SDA Church, Mrs. Lindsey faithfully served in many capacities to include founder of the Messengers Gospel Choir and member of other Boards and Committees.  The powerful duet, the Voices of Israel, was comprised of Mrs. Lindsey and her close friend Mrs. Ada Lyles, with whom she enjoyed performing in various churches, ministries and revivals.  Mrs. Lindsey earnestly valued her commitment to the ministry and became a Kindergarten Teacher at Ephesus Junior Academy where she genuinely cared for the students entrusted to her tutelage.  Having to devote more time and attention to the well-being of her spouse, Lucy left the classroom and became a Bus Driver for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.  Lucy's pedagogical aspirations extended to her bus in that she encouraged the students that she transported to become reading champions.  Mrs. Lindsey provided age and grade appropriate books for the children to select and read.  Upon completion of the books Lucy rewarded the students by providing a treat box from which they would be able to select a treat of their choosing.  Mrs. Lindsey ultimately retired from being a Bus Driver after 32 years.

Mrs. Lindsey was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick O. Lindsey, her parents, John and Beulah Wright, Sr., 3 brothers, John Wright, Jr., Tony Wright, Sr. (Surviving Spouse, Nannie Wright) and Richard Wright, and a son, Bobby Boykin, Jr.

She leaves to cherish memories, a devoted brother, Wallace Wright, daughters, Beverly Robinson (Odell) and Bianca Boykin-Green who was her Caretaker and a son, Barry Boykin (Betty-Fiancé); grandchildren, Carmen and Christopher Robinson, Jeremy Boykin, Porchia McMillian, Dorron Green and Anthony Mayfield; a host of great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins and several dear friends.  Of particular appreciation and gratitude, Karice Williams (CNA), Claudette Albright, Curtis Blue, the Staff of the Williams Adult Day Center and the Physicians/Nursing and Support Staff of the 9 th Floor of Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center (W-S)
