Obituary

Mae Francis McFarlin McRae, 92, transitioned on to glory on Monday, January 16, 2023.  Mrs. McRae  a native of Chesterfield, SC, was born July 14, 1930 to the late Harmon and Helen McQueen-McFarlin. Affectionately known as Mala, Mula, Ma and Grandma Mala.

Mrs. McCrae was a graduate of Chesterfield High School. Shortly after graduation, she and her family relocated to Winston-Salem, NC. Mae Francis was a homemaker for many years. She worked at Western Electric for several years. Then, Mrs. McRae chose a career path in early childhood education.  Mrs. McRae received a certificate in Early Childhood Development from Forsyth Technical Community College. Shortly thereafter, she went to work for Bethlehem Community Child Development Center and retired after eighteen years.

Mrs. McRae was a faithful member of Zion Memorial Missionary Baptist Church for fifty-six years, serving on the Missionary Board and Nursing Board as president. She was intentional in maintaining a closely-knit family. Dedicated her life to being involved in every aspect of their lives, with enthusiasm and love.

Mrs. McRae is preceded in death by two sons, Vincent McRae Sr. and Glenn McRae; siblings, William McFarlin, James B. McFarlin, Margaret M. Lowrance, and Mildred M. Dobson.

She is survived by eight children Dorothy McRae-Pettus (longtime caretaker), Lois Virginia McRae-Burks, Phyllis V. McRae, Greg (Quenna) McRae of Athens, AL, Cheryl (Kenneth) McRae Inzar, Wylie B. McRae, Valeria R. McRae of Jonesboro, GA, and Lynetta R. McRae; fourteen grandchildren, Tywanda Funches, Tyneta(Jerome) Heath, Vincent (Regina) McRae Jr., Chanetta McRae, Juan(Camilla) McRae, Kim Pettus, Janelle McRae, Karesha McRae, Amanda (Antonio) McRae Williams, Ronald Rogers, Erica(Jerrod) McRae Johnson, Giovanni McRae, Mychal Wolfe, Mychala Wolfe; twenty-two great-grandchildren; as well as siblings, Floretta M. Gregory, Preston (Priscilla) McFarlin, and Runetta M. Patterson; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family and friends.

Public viewing will be held Monday, January 23, 12-6pm at Hooper Funeral Home. Family Visitation will be Tuesday, Jan. 24, 11am-12pm at Zion Memorial Baptist Church, with Funeral Service following at noon. Service will also be live streamed on Zion Memorial's Facebook page. Interment will follow at Gardens of Memory, Walkertown, NC.
