Mrs. Margaret Georgetta Brewer Ricks Kermee (Sister Margaret) was called to be with the Lord September 22, 2024. Sister Margaret was born in Harper City Cape Palmas, Maryland County, Liberia on September 16, 1948 to Mr. James Hilary Brewer Sr. and Julia Gheudedeh Dennis. She was reared by her loving aunty Mrs. Margaret Johns. She received her early education at the Convent and graduated from Our Lady of Fatima High School.
She later moved to Monrovia and lived with her aunt, Malvenia Wallace, while she attended the Tubman National Institute of Medical Arts (TNIMA). She graduated in 1968 with a nursing degree. She worked in Monrovia a year before relocating to Kansas City, Kansas, USA, to further her studies. She later moved to New York and settled in the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood in Brooklyn where she met and later married Mr. Austin Ricks, who predeceased her. She later married Mr. James Kermee who also predeceased her. She worked as a registered nurse at Coney Island Hospital and at Oceanview Manor Assisted Living Facility in Coney Island, until she lost her sight. Being blind never held her back, though. She received braille and mobility training as well as a companion guide dog, Josie, from the Helen Keller Institute. With Josie leading the way, Sister Margaret traversed the tangled subway system and bustling city streets several days a week to take courses at the CUNY Graduate Center in Midtown Manhattan. She received a Master Degree of Social Work to fulfill her dream of helping other visually impaired people.
She is survived by her son Hilary James Brewer, daughter in-law Ivana Di Stefano Brewer and two grandchildren, Alessandro Antonio and Isabella Antonia. She is also survived by her siblings (maternal): Rev. Wilmot Degaulle Dennis (Norma), Mrs. Maggie Clarke Quire (Christian), Joseph Clarke (Ciatta), Leon Clarke (Fanny) Myrtle Clarke, Clavenda Clarke Watson (Joe) Magdalene Clarke Hare (William) Julia Clarke an Elizabeth Clarke (Dennis); (paternal): Chelnicia Brewer Blamo (Joseph), Onet Brewer Witherspoon (William), Nazarene Brewer Tubman(Wiliam), Alida Brewer Delaney (Hankey), Hardenglenn Brewer (Wokie) and Henryton Brewer (Jeannie). She leaves behind her stepmother Bettie Brewer, a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and her lifelong friend, Kolu Baysah. She was preceded in death by her mother, Julia G, Dennis, and father, Superintendent Hilary Brewer, Margaret Johns (Aunt Mato) who she referred to as "Ma", and some of her siblings. Mrs. Margaret Brewer Kermee embraced the Christian faith and remained faithful until her death.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday November 1, 2024 at Stanleyville Baptist Church, 851 Ziglar Rd Winston-Salem, NC 27105. The family will receive friends from 10:00am-11:00 am at the church. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens..
