Mrs. Maxine Smith Simmons was born April 26, 1918 in New London, NC to Kathleen Smith. She resided in Winston-Salem, NC for most of her life.
She attended the WSFC public schools and was a graduate of Atkins High School. She later matriculated to Elite Beauty College. Mrs. Simmons was the owner/operator of Simmons Beauty Shop on Rich Avenue. Professionally, she was a member of the Winston-Salem Beautician Association Chapter # 2 for over 68 years, where she held position as the assistant recording secretary, and was on the sick committee. She received an Associate degree in 1974, from the National Institute of Beauty Culture League Inc. in Louisville, KY. Mrs. Simmons also held membership with the North Carolina State Beauticians and Cosmetologist Association. As a model representing the local and state associations, she received the "Ms. Congeniality " award from the NC Institute of Beauty Culture League Inc.
She loved to have a great time and attended many functions with her husband of the Phoenix Club. Mrs. Maxine's all time favorite movie was "Dirty Dancing."
Spiritually, she was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church before changing her membership to Shiloh Baptist Church to be with her husband, and faithfully served before declining health on the Ladies Progressive Ministry and Sheepfold Ministry.
She was preceded in death by her husband Willie L. Simmons; sister, Margaret Landon; niece Brenda Mauney; great nephew, Brandon Mauney. She departed this life Thursday January 23, 2020 in Charlotte, NC.
Those left to cherish precious memories are three nephews; Johnnie Landon, Harold Lee Smith, and Reverend James (Renita) Linville; great nieces, Barenda Mauney, Jana Landon, Kayla Landon, and devoted great niece/caregiver whom she lived with, Charlene (Dennis) Royster; great nephew, Charles Mauney Jr.; a host of great great nieces and nephews, great, great great nieces and nephews; other relatives and dear friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 pm Saturday February 1, 2020 at Shiloh Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 2-2:30 pm at the church. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
