Mrs. Mercile Crowell Johnson was born January 17, 1936 in Charlotte, North Carolina to Walter and Ella Mae Allen Crowell. She was a graduate of Second Ward High School and James W. Garner School of Religion (both of Charlotte), and McLean Business School, Winston-Salem, NC.

Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Secretary and Stenographer Clubs of Winston-Salem, NC and spiritually, was a longtime member of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church.

"Mama J", "Ms. J", "Ms. Mercile", or just plain Mama, no matter the name, was a stranger to no one. Sometimes it was just a word of encouragement, a meal, or just making you feel comfortable as an invited guest at one of the many family gatherings.  Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the neighborhood children alike (who also affectionately called her grandma), always held a special place in her heart.

She was preceded in death by four siblings.

Mrs. Johnson departed this life Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at her residence.

She is survived by her husband, Robert A. Johnson of the home; two sons, Robert L. Johnson (Deborah Moore) of Chapel Hill, NC and Harvey (Initha) Johnson of  South Boston, VA; two daughters, JoAnn (Morris) Davis of Durham, NC and Teresa Johnson (Leon Frank) of Winston-Salem, NC;  19 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 1 great great-grandchild; a devoted god daughter, Ouida Patton; sister-in-law, Diane Hooper; three nieces; two nephews; special cousins, Faye Williams and Juanita Wilson; devoted friends, Shamel Gray, Debra Watson, Terry Jones, and Ruth Page; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at Evergreen Cemetery. There will be no public viewing.
