Obituary

Modine Richardson was the fifth of eleven children born to the late Alexander and Mary Terry Richardson. Her arrival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on February 18, 1942 marked the beginning of a life steeped in thoughtfulness, generosity, and humility.

Her early Christian Education began at Mount Zion Baptist Church where she joined and was baptized under the pastorate of the late Reverend Dr. K. O. P. Goodwin. She exercised the tenets of her faith as a devoted member of the church throughout her life. She was a strong servant of the Lord. Her natural ability to organize and complete tasks with excellence made her useful in God's Kingdom. Without reservation, she served in the Sr. Missionary Circle, on the Ladies Usher Board and the Presidents' Council. She studied diligently the Word of God as a member of Sunday School Class #6.

Modine was educated in the public schools of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County and graduated from Atkins High School in the class of 1960. She then enrolled at Winston-Salem State University where she earned a B. S. Degree in 1964.

Modine Richardson Shaw used her education and spiritual gifts to motivate, teach and reach middle school aged youth. She had a knack for communicating with young black children. She began her teaching career in Erwin, North Carolina at Gentry Jr. High School. Later she joined the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System where she taught at Hanes Jr. High and Philo Middle School. She touched the lives of many children throughout her 34 years of dedicated service.

After retirement in 1998, Modine remained true to her family's Christian values, and commitment to honoring God with her gifts. Until her health failed, she was actively engaged in serving the disadvantaged through the Mount Zion Sr. Missionary Department as a vital member of the Sarah Group. She visited the sick and shut-in, sent cards and gifts to them and the bereaved as well. She gave faithfully to Crisis Control, The Samaritan Ministries and Goodwill Industries. Her innate financial and administrative gifts kept her busy as she cared for the finances of the Presidents' Council, the Ladies Usher Board, Sunday School Class #6, and Mount Zion Day to name a few. She was honored by the Ladies Usher Board in 1994 for her efficiency and effectiveness as a Doorkeeper in the House of the Lord.

Modine Richardson Shaw, A big "Christian Heart" in a small "Missionary's Body," went home to be with the Lord from Silas Creek Rehabilitation Center in Winston-Salem on Tuesday, January 28, 2025. She was preceded in death by her parents and eight siblings.
