Obituary

Mr. Randolph Purvis, born August 8, 1949 to the late James and Benzena Dargan Purvis in Winston-Salem, N. C. After a stay in the hospital and a brief illness at his home, on July 23, 2025 Randolph went to his heavenly home.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Vernola Purvis Jackson.

Randolph was raised in the Happy Hill Gardens and the Greenway Avenue communities.  He attended Paisley High School and graduated from Carver High School in 1969.  Randolph joined the US Navy in 1969 completing 6 years of service with an Honorable discharge in 1975. After retiring from RJ Reynolds following 35 years of dedicated service, he stayed active by working part-time at Wendy's for 12 years, where he enjoyed staying busy.  Randolph was married to Darlene Pope and to this union was born a son, Monté Purvis.

Randolph was a family man especially with his children and grandchildren.  He never missed a chance to support them at their countless sporting events. He loved WSSU football and could often be found tailgating in the parking lot with his buddies. He was also a big Carolina basketball fan. You could see him almost daily under the tree at the East Winston Food Lion with the "Boys". He loved his truck so much he washed it almost every day. Randolph always had a smile on his face and made everything a joke. Herman "Hawk" Hawkins and the late Harry Transou were two of his favorite people.

Spiritually, he is a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church where he volunteered on various committees helping wherever he could.  He was awarded the Laity Award in March 2025.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 25 years Darlene P. Purvis; sons Monté Purvis (Kelli) and Rodney Purvis (Tremona); daughters, Monica Pope, Tiffany Pope;  5 grandchildren, Makhi, Laila, Madox Purvis, De'Quante Richards and Allycé Mitchell; 1 great grandchild; brother, James Purvis of Ontario, California; sisters Barbara P.
