Robert Leon Carter, III (affectionately known as Third) was born to Mr. Robert Leon Carter II and the late Mrs. Margaret Crumblin Carter on February 24, 1954. Third attended St. Benedict and Bishop McGuinness Catholic Schools. He enlisted in the Army in 1972 and served two years. He received an honorable discharge for his services.

Third was employed at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. His profession changed at Baptist Hospital as an embalmer. He took pride in preparing the deceased whether it was for public or private viewing

Third relocated to Kentucky and continued in his profession as an embalmer.

During his leisure, Third enjoyed playing chess, talking politics and chatting with his neighbors while walking his dog.

Third is preceded in death by his mother, Margaret C. Carter; sister, Roberta E. Carter, brothers-in-law, Larry T. Johnson and Rodney B. Young; nephew, Dwayne C. Johnson

Third is survived by his father, Robert L. Carter of Winston-Salem, NC; son Madison Alexander Smith, Greensboro, NC; siblings,  John Carter, Joan Carter Young both of Winston-Salem, NC, Michael (Sharon) Carter-Sickleville, NJ, Michelle Carter Johnson, Wendy Carter  both of Winston-Salem, NC, Warren Carter Lithonia, GA, Kenneth Carter, Karen (Len) Parker all of Winston-Salem, NC, Stephen Carter of Greensboro  of Greensboro, NC; a very devoted companion of 22 years, Patricia Walker of Frankfort, Kentucky; grandson, Nasir Carter Smith; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 12:30 pm Thursday January 13, 2022 in the chapel of Hooper Funeral Home.  The family will receive friends from 12pm-12:30pm. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens.
