On Saturday, February 25, 2023, God dispatched his Special Angels to deliver the soul of his beloved, Robert Allen Johnson to heaven's gates for the reward of peaceful and eternal rest.
Pops, gentle giant, daddy Johnson, Mr. J., Mr. Rob, were all affectionate names known by this man in his community, but most of all he was known as Rob, daddy and granddad by those who knew him best, his family. He was very connected with the community, serving as the most tenured, recognizable personality of Hooper Funeral Home, Inc. to which he dedicated more than half a century of service. Rob was well known for his affectionate smile, passion, and witted personality. His caring heart and sense of responsibility was witnessed many times through mentorship, counseling and sports sponsorship for youth and adults alike and the families he connected with through his service at the funeral home for many years.
Rob was born in Winston Salem to Jessie and Mary Johnson and was raised by his adoptive parents, Thomas H. and Johnnye Hooper Jr., all of whom have predeceased him. He was a 1954 graduate of Atkins High School, attended N.C. A & T State University, majoring in Sociology. In the community, he was a member of the Phalanx Fraternity and was active in the Democratic Party serving as voting precinct captain for many years. Mr. Johnson was a retiree of RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company with over 30 years of service.
In addition to his biological parents and adoptive parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mercile Crowell Johnson; two brothers, Horace Mayfield and Thomas H. Hooper III.
He is survived by sons, Robert (Deborah) Johnson of Chapel Hill, NC and Harvey (Ianthania) Johnson of South Boston, VA; two daughters, JoAnn (Morris) Davis of Durham NC and Teresa (Leon Franks) Johnson of Winston Salem, NC; 10 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; god daughters; Ouida Patten and Lauren(Daren) Rogers; sister-in-law, Diane Hooper; nephew Phillip(Carla Carrasco) Hooper; devoted cousins Faye Williams and Juanita Wilson; devoted friend Rufus Smith Sr. who visited him daily; caregivers Deborah Watson, Terry Jones, Rachel Redford, Linda Walker, Elizabeth Patterson, Cassandra Jones, and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Saturday March 4, 2023 in the chapel of Hooper Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from1:30pm-2:00pm at the funeral home Saturday. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery
