Obituary

Samuel Waddell Granger, Jr. (Sam), 90, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, June 23, 2025 while residing at Golden Lamb Rest Home in Winston-Salem, NC.

Born as an only child to the late Samuel Waddell, Sr. and Luzenia Granger in 1934, Sam was raised in Winston-Salem among his extended family. After graduating Carver High School, he worked for over three decades as a dedicated employee of R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. After retirement, Sam completed work as a gifted, self-taught handyman for family, friends, and at his church home of many decades, Saint Mark Lutheran Church in Winston-Salem. As a younger man, Sam enjoyed travel, was an avid photographer, and he played host to a large annual family reunion each summer in Winston-Salem. Having never learned to drive, Sam could often be seen walking most places he wanted to go, which kept him healthy and fit for many years.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by caring church members, friends, cousins, and extended family, including Doris Friday and Vera Friday (Nathaniel) Williams who lovingly oversaw his affairs in his final years. Sam's family thanks the staff of Golden Lamb for their care for Sam over the past 5 years. He will be remembered as kind, generous, and hardworking.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday July 5, 2025 at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 1151 E. 14th St Winston-Salem, NC.
