Obituary

Sheldon Jones Thompson, affectionately called "Rickey," age 70, was born to Effie Thompson and Will B. Jones on July 9, 1955 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He made his transition to eternal life on September 24, 2025 at Katie B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a long illness.

Sheldon was the youngest of four and the only son of the late Effie T. McCorkle. An exceptionally gifted athlete, he excelled in basketball and football at Hanes and North Forsyth High Schools. Upon graduating from North Forsyth, Class of 1973, he was employed by a few companies including R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and Big Lots Warehouse.

Sheldon was a member of Second Calvary Baptist Church as a young child and reconnected with the church as an adult. He joined the D.S. Stowe Celestial Choir and the Male Chorus at Second Calvary. A love of life and the Lord he truly had.

Listening to music, singing, word searches and watching sports on TV were his pastimes.  His favorite NFL football team was the Dallas Cowboys. Sheldon never met a stranger he didn't know. Sheldon had this ability to light up a room with his charismatic personality. His last residence was Patriot Assisted Living in Yadkinville, North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Effie Thompson McCorkle and Will B. Jones; sister, Kathleen Kiser; two brothers-in-law, Ellis Kiser and Pastor Donald Stowe Sr.

Memories that will live on with: his two loving and devoted sisters, Swanetta Stowe and LaVerne (Elmer) Hawkins; five children, Marlon (LaToya) Horne, Shenae Moncrief, Chevella Barksdale, Tianni Brown all of Winston-Salem and Marquis Moncrief of Billings, Montana; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two special nieces, Almer Hawkins of Winston-Salem and Sonya (Clavoski) Peaks of Wake Forest; one great-nephew, Nicholas Peaks of Raleigh; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 pm Saturday October 4, 2025 at Second Calvary Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 11:30am-12pm at the church Saturday.
