Shirley Ann
Smith
Aug 2, 1936 — Mar 18, 2025
Shirley Ann Redmon Smith, 88, transitioned from this life to her eternal home, in the presence of family at home, on March 18, 2025.
Shirley was born August 2, 1936, to Dewey and Beulah Parks Redmon in Wilkes County. Raised in North Wilkesboro, she graduated from Lincoln Heights High School in 1954. Shirley moved to New Rochelle, New York, where she worked before attending nursing school and earning her degree in License Practical Nursing. She began working at New Rochelle Hospital in 1972 on the mother-baby unit until her retirement in 1996. Shirley moved back to North Carolina where she started working at Forsyth Medical Center in the mother-baby unit. Shirley spent her last year before retiring in 2001 completing infant hearing screenings on the newborns.
Shirley was a woman of faith. While in New Rochelle, she was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church. Upon moving to Winston Salem, she joined United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church and faithfully served in the Senior Missionaries.
In the community, she was an active member of the Skyland Senior Citizens Club, having served as Secretary for a number of years. Shirley was an active member of the Jerry Long YMCA, where you could find her in one of her favorite Silver Sneakers classes five days a week. Shirley loved spending time with her family and friends. The family get-togethers were always special to her. She also enjoyed going out for lunch with the "Y gang" after a class at the YMCA.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Dewey and Beulah Redmon; her husband, Carl Smith; three brothers, Bobby Parks, Carlvester Parks, and Tommy Parks; and a sister Louellen Cockeran.
She leaves to cherish her memory a son, Gregory Smith (Darlene); a stepson, Richard Penn (Jennifer), and a daughter, Carla Parreott (Dorian); one sister, Cathy Parks; one brother, James Redmon; five grandchildren, Patra, Shannon, Cherressa, Ricky, and Jiyai; five great-grandchildren, Angela, Mikaela, and My'esha, Toriq, and Zariq; two great-great-grandchildren Kaeomi and Londyn; Goddaughter Bridget; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made in memory of Shirley to the Jerry Long YMCA.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11:30am Thursday, March 27, 2025 at United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 11:00am-11:30am at the church. Interment will follow at Scenic Memorial Gardens Wilkesboro, NC
