Obituary

Shona Yvette Jones (lovingly known as Nona) was born on Sunday, November 7, 1965, to Sandra Mary Jones and the late Willie Lee Jones in Rahway, NJ.

In January of 1980, Shona gave her life to the Lord as a teenager during a one-week revival in her hometown of Rahway at Holy Mountain Church of God in Christ. While she was always active in church activities, singing was truly her passion and gift. Shona's voice was strong yet sincere in expressing her love for worshipping God. One would have never known this powerhouse was once too shy to sing in front of others. Yet, her gift really "SHONA" behind the mic, leading songs in the choir, rendering solos, and ushering the worship team and congregation to the highest praise.

Shona enjoyed helping others in whatever way she could, and she especially had a tender affection for helping children. As an act of service, Shona worked in the children's church ministry, during the early years of Agape Family Worship Center in Rahway, NJ. She was also employed by two daycare centers in Newark, NJ. Shona's love for being of service to others continued as she worked at Jesus Book & Gift Store, Iselin, NJ. She worked and managed the store for several years, leaving an indelible mark on everyone she encountered.

Educated in the Rahway public school system during her formative years, Shona completed two years at Bennett College in Greensboro, NC. She later received her bachelor's degree in social work from Winston-Salem State University, where she received the Non-Traditional Student Award.

After receiving her social work degree, Shona resided in NC and was employed by Next Step Ministries. Her role was to meet women of domestic violence, often late at night, to get them to a safe location. While Shona would share stories of facing danger, she did not express fear. For Shona, the safety, well-being, and happiness of others was her mission.

Shona faced several medical setbacks, beginning in her teenage years, but she sang her entire lifespan. Shona's musical journey began in Rahway, NJ at Holy Mountain Church of God in Christ (the late Robert L. Bragg, Pastor), and Agape Family Worship Center (Dr. Lawrence Powell, Pastor), and then to Evangel Fellowship COGIC (the late Bishop Otis Lockett, Sr., Pastor), New Beginnings Community Outreach Church, (the late Nancy Wilson, Pastor) and continued till her final days at Center City Church (Dan Colvin, Pastor) all in Greensboro, NC. Her powerful voice, gentle spirit, and fervent worship will be remembered always.

On January 4, 2024, Shona went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was predeceased by her father, Willie Lee Jones. Left to celebrate her life with loving memories of her warmth, bright smile, and genuine love for others are her daughter under guardianship, Leah Williams; godson, Isaiah Williams; god-daughter, Jada Connor; mother, Sandra M. Jones; brother, Lane F. Jones (Aretha); sisters, Darlisa Chess (Michael), Monique P. Jones, and Samone A. Jones; four nephews, four nieces, one great nephew; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and longtime friends. Our dear Shona…she was so easy to love.
