Obituary

Susie Carolyn Bellamy Nance was born September 20, 1937, the youngest of three children, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to the late William and Jesse Bellamy. Two older brothers, Will Junior Bellamy and Lewis Bellamy, preceded her in death. She entered into eternal rest on May 20, 2024.

She was educated in the Winston-Salem Public Schools, having graduated from Atkins High School in 1955. Her secondary education was completed at Winston-Salem State University where she earned a B.S. Degree in Education. Mrs. Nance later earned a Master's Degree in Reading from UNC Greensboro. She loved learning and was consistently taking classes and was an RJ Reynolds Scholar.

Mrs. Nance taught school at Old Richmond Elementary School in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System for 34 years earning the title of Math Teacher of the Year. She also spent one year teaching at Stoneville Elementary. She retired from education in 2001.

A member of Mars Hill Missionary Baptist Church for more than 50 years, she held many positions in the church but her love was for the missionary society. She loved Bible study and was particularly fond of the seasoned members and the youth of the church. She was President of the Forsyth County Missionary Union. In February, 2015 she joined New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church.

Mrs. Nance also held membership in numerous organizations including: Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. (Past President), Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Gamma Phi Delta Inc., National Association of University Women, Kernersville Chapter of National Women of Achievement (Past President), Brown Alumni Chapter, WSSU, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Emancipation Association, Forsyth County Missionary Union, Butterfly Redhatters (Co-Founder), Sister Speaks, Sunshine Gang, and The Women's Fund of Winston-Salem.

Susie was married to Houston Lewis Nance on March 2, 1957. To this union was born Terron DeVaughn Nance. She cherished her grandchildren, Michelle Suzette Nance and DeVaughn Lewis Nance, and her one great-grandchild, Melody Joanna Torres. Her daughter-in-law, Linda Nance, was a precious gem.

Houston and Susie loved to travel and had traveled extensively around the world. Their utmost high was in 2009 when they visited several areas of the Holy Land. Travels also included visiting 43 US States and internationally: Paris, France, Barcelona, Spain, Sydney, Australia, Hong Kong, Beijing, China, Hawaii (4 trips), Alaska (2 trips), Virgin Islands, Nassau, Bahamas, Bermuda, Jamaica, Venezuela, Belize, Guatemala, Rome, Italy, Jerusalem, Turkey, Greece, Canada, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, South Africa (2 trips), Japan, Caribbean, Barbados, Mexico, Mediterranean Sea, Europe. Susie loved people and was a people person!

A Homegoing Celebration will be held 1:00 PM Saturday June 1, 2024 at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. The family will receive friends starting at 12 Noon.  The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Ivy Beyond The Wall Service will be held starting at 11:30am. Entombment will be held at Gardens of Memory Walkertown, NC.
