Obituary

Vicar Tony Dewayne Martin, Sr., beloved son, father, and brother, affectionately known as Vicar, fought a good fight, finished a strong race, and was rewarded his crown of righteousness on November 8, 2022, at the age of fifty-one. He was born in Winston-Salem, NC to the late Quincey Lovall Martin and Betty Martin-Watson. He was preceded in death by Reverend William T. Parson and Lorenzo Bernard Watson, Sr. (Papa) who were instrumental nurturing father role models; his great-grandmother Jannie Mae Pickens and grandmother Julia Mae Scales, two aunts Geneva Pickens and Shirley Kelly, four uncles William Ceifus Pickens, Charlie Joe, Sr., Johnny Joe, Sr., and Willie Spencer Lane; two cousins Charlie Joe, Jr., and Julius Clark.

Vicar Tony Martin was a graduate of Carver High School. He received his Bachelor of Science from Winston-Salem State University and Master of Science from Penn State University. At the time of his death, he was enrolled in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Concordia College Seminary STM Program under the spiritual mentoring and guidance of Reverends David Tessman and Donald Anthony. He was serving as the Vicar of Saint Mark Lutheran Church and was scheduled to be ordained as the full-time pastor upon completing his seminary studies. He was on faculty at Central Piedmont University where he taught biology in the Science Department.


Vicar Tony Martin leaves to cherish his loving memories his mother Betty Martin-Watson, two sons Tony Martin, Jr and Trentan Slade. One brother James Robert (Quivette) Joe, two sisters Tanya Martin, and Tammy Jackson. An uncle Larry (Pamela) Joe, four aunts Sandra (Terry) Faye Gibbs, Roberta Geneva Joe, Kay (Curtis) Barnes, and Sonya Parson. His three nephews Antwan Campbell, Davone Hudson, Kedrick (Lanita) Martin and two nieces Montika Brown and Arlexia Taylor. His cousins Erica (Jay) Baker, Torino (John) Brown, Johnny Joe Jr., Lamont Joe, Lamonttica Joe, Robert Joe, Theon Joe, and David Mankins. Two stepdaughters Candice Sutton and CyEreka (Claude) Edouard. A special lifelong friend Tori Edmonson, and childhood friends James Peoples and Marc Sloan. A close faithful church body, Lenora Campbell, Bernard Cardwell, Jeannie Cardwell, Samuel Granger, Eva Jackson, Barbara Ledbetter, and Adrienne Smith. A host of other relatives and friends.

A service of memory celebrating his life will be held December 3, 2022, beginning at 11 a.m. for the family visitation and 12 p.m. worship service, at Saint Mark Lutheran Church, 1151 East Fourteen Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27105.
