Bishop Wallace Shields Jr., affectionately known as Bishop Mike, was born May 19, 1954 to the late Bishop Wallace Shields Sr.. and Mother Lucille Banks Shields who preceded him in death.
Bishop Mike departed his earthly home on Thursday, July 27, 2023 at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist hospital with family at his bedside.
Bishop Mike was educated in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System and graduated from East Forsyth high school in 1972. He graduated from Elizabeth City State University in 1976 with a bachelors degree in sociology. He met Patricia Ann Jackson and they were united in marriage in 1981.
His career with the North Carolina Department of corrections lasted for 34 years. He became a correctional officer for Davie correctional center in 1977 and was promoted to sergeant. He later became the superintendent of Cherry Street correctional center and he retired in 2011.
Bishop Mike was a true servant of God. Bishop Mike became pastor of Macedonia Holiness Church in Durham, NC in 2003. He remained their faithful pastor until his death. He celebrated 20 years as a pastor in June of this year. He served the C.O.G.I.J.C.A. organization faithfully in his role as Assistant Presiding Bishop.
Bishop Mike will certainly be missed by many who loved and respected him. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his siblings Robert Lee Shields and Dora Spears.
He leaves to share his loving memory, his wife of 42 years, Elder Patricia Jackson Shields; two sons, Edward Monte' Jackson and Johnell McCray II, 10 grandchildren, 7 siblings, Eugene (Luberta) Shields, Kay Shields Sackey, Bishop Randy (J. Ruth) Shields, Evangelist Gail (Bishop Kelvin) Cash, Timothy (Phyllis) Shields, Terry Shields, and Kenneth (Kym) Shields; brother-in-law, Joe Jackson; two sister-in-laws, Sarah Jenkins and Marianna Clark; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, other relatives and friends.
Services will be held on Friday August 4, 2023 from 6-8PM and on Saturday August 5, 2023 with visitation from 11AM - 12PM and the homegoing celebration beginning at 12PM. All services will be held at Temple Holiness Church located at 2218 East 22nd Street, Winston Salem, NC 27105. Interment will be held in Crestview Memorial Park.
Bishop Shields remains may be viewed Friday from 12pm-4:30pm at the funeral home.
