Obituary

Elder Willie Gaskins (lovingly known as Mr. Willie) transitioned to his heavenly home on Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at Novant Medical Center in Huntersville, NC following an extended illness.

He was born to the late Willie Gaffney and Sarah Havner on May 17, 1930 in Winston Salem, NC.  Though he lived during a time of unprecedented hardship for men of color, he prevailed and graduated from Atkins High School.

"Mr. Willie" grew up seeing ads for the US Navy and aspired to "Join the Navy, See the world" from a young age.  He fulfilled his dream of becoming a sailor when he joined the US Navy in 1947 and faithfully served  for nine (9) years, three of which were spent actively defending his country during the Korean war.  He was honorably discharged after a service-related injury.

"Mr. Willie" was predeceased by his father Roosevelt Gaffney, mother Sarah Havner and Son Kristopher Gaskins. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter and dedicated caregiver, Kristina; children, Carolyn Khojasteh,  Denise Dunovant Ray (Darryl) and others; grandchildren Jaylen Kristopher Gaskins, Caiden Whitaker, Kayla Greene, Lia Simmons and others; devoted special friends Rick and Pamela Gaskins-Horne; special fishing buddy and lifelong brother Tim Rudder (Helen) and a host of other family and friends.

In addition to the Lord and the Navy, Mr. Wille loved fishing and the Atlanta Braves. There were two important seasons for "Mr. Willie" -- fishing season and baseball season.  He was known to fish daily following his retirement from the Navy until he was no longer able, and he was easily recognizable by his signature Atlanta Braves baseball cap.

Known for his warm smile and toothless grin, Mr. Willie never met any strangers.  The warmth of his heart permeated the atmosphere, and he was truly loved by all.  His legacy will continue forever.

A Public Viewing will be held on Thursday, June 18, 2020 between 12 PM and 6 PM at Hooper Funeral Home 1415 14th St NE, Winston-Salem, NC 27105. Funeral service will be private. Interment Salisbury National Cemetery.
